Summer Storage

If you're not planning on moving your items back home for the summer then chances are you will be storing them nearby campus. Do you choose a local self storage company or a portable storage unit? Both options offer benefits and drawbacks that will vary based on each students preferences and needs so make sure you weigh your options and select the right storage solution for you.

Portable Storage

Portable Storage for Summer StorageAlthough this is a relatively new option for most college students, portable storage has been around for a little over ten years. There is little doubt that you know the term "PODS" which stands for Portable on Demand Storage. Similar to U-Haul and truck rentals, people generally refer to a portable storage unit as a "pod" and limit themselves to one specific company. Believe it or not, there are many different types of portable storage companies out there, some with local and regional operations and others with complete nationwide coverage. The other major difference between many of these companies is the size of their "pods", also referred to as units or bins. As a college student you probably don't have too many items, certainly not enough for a large 16' unit. Students considering portable storage should look for companies that offer smaller units capable of storing 6-8' worth of items.

It's important to remember that portable storage units will be delivered to your campus or apartment complex for both your move-in and move-out. You will want to check with your college to make sure that this is allowed and if a permit is required. Many schools allow these units to be on site however they require them to be delivered and picked up on days that do not conflict with the official campus moving dates.

Benefits of Portable Storage

  • Units are delivered to your campus during your move-in and move-out. No need to rent a truck or load and then unload at a self storage location.
  • Smaller units (6-8') are perfect for the college student with furniture or appliances.
  • The smaller units are usually very affordable and do not have a minimum contract requirement.
  • Most companies offer climate controlled warehouse storage so your items will be kept cool and dry.
  • Because the units are delivered outside of the designated campus moving dates you have the flexibility to load or unload them when it's convenient for you.

Self Storage

If portable storage does not fit your needs then chances are self storage will. Many self storage companies offer attractive deals for college students during the summer months and may offer reduced pricing, free use of a rental truck or free moving boxes. Some local storage companies in college towns require college student business in order to stay in business. These companies may offer a summer package offer which includes your summer storage for one flat price.

When choosing a self storage company make sure you check to see if they offer a climate controlled environment. It's also important to remember that if you do not have a vehicle capable of transporting your items that you will need a rental truck or pickup. Lastly, check the contractual requirements for potential storage locations, many require a 60-day notice to end your storage contract without penalty.

Benefits of Self Storage

  • Many self storage locations offer a wide variety of unit sizes, some as small as 5'x5'.
  • To remain competitive, many companies in college towns will offer attractive pricing for summer storage.
  • Although you can access a portable storage unit relatively easily, you generally have 24-hour access to self storage units.
